A new property shows an empty table for the first few days. People read that emptiness as a problem and start rewriting pages.
That is the wrong response. Here is what the table can and cannot say.
What the first week tells you
Almost nothing about demand. Plenty about plumbing.
- whether pages are being discovered at all
- whether the sitemap was accepted
- whether the property is the one you think it is
- whether a page is indexed under an unexpected URL
What the first month tells you
Impressions arrive before clicks, often by a wide margin. A worked first month for a fictional dental practice, Brightwater Dental.
period: 2026-09-01 to 2026-09-28, 28 days
property: brightwater.example, domain property
pages indexed: 14 of 16 submitted
totals
impressions 1,860
clicks 41
click rate 2.2% (41 / 1860)
avg position 18.6
top three queries
query impressions clicks position
brightwater dental hygienist 410 12 9.2
emergency dentist brightwater 260 7 11.4
dental check up cost 190 2 22.8
pages with impressions and no clicks
/pricing 220 impressions, 0 clicks
/about 140 impressions, 0 clicks
/emergency 90 impressions, 0 clicks
The interesting rows are the last three. A page with impressions and no clicks usually has a title that describes the site rather than the page.
The four-week plan
- Week 1. Confirm the property, the sitemap and the crawl. Change nothing because the table is empty.
- Week 2. List the pages with impressions, and read the query behind each one.
- Week 3. Read the pages with impressions and no clicks against their queries.
- Week 4. Pick one theme from the queries that appeared, and write down what you decided not to do.
Two readings to distrust
An average position blended across unrelated queries cannot guide a page. A total click count for a new site is a small number with a large swing.
Neither one supports a decision on its own.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No impressions after 14 days | The property is unverified, or the sitemap was rejected | Check verification, then the sitemap report |
| Impressions but only branded queries | Nothing else is indexed yet | Check the index coverage list, then wait |
| One page holds every impression | The other pages are not linked | Add internal links, do not rewrite everything |
| Query data is missing entirely | The property is new, or data is still processing | Wait, and read pages instead |
| Numbers jumped then settled | A crawl happened, not a ranking change | Compare 28 days with 28 days |
Acceptance: the month is read when
- the property, the sitemap and the crawl are all confirmed
- every page with impressions has been read against its query
- the pages with no impressions are listed, not ignored
- one theme for next month is chosen, with a reason
- the decisions you declined are written down
Limits
Search Console reports what Google chose to show, rounded and sampled in places. It is the best free source of your own query data, and it is partial.
Missing is not zero. A query absent from the report was not necessarily absent from search. No page should be deleted on that basis alone.
